Overview

The Tamang Heritage Trail is an interesting route, which lies between the two mighty peaks, Langtang (3,500 m) and Ganesh Himal (7,429 m). This trail is close to the famous Langtang Valley, which passes through 'Tamang' villages - early settlers of the high hilly mountains. Besides the tranquil environment and the towering display of the Himalayan range, another highlight of this trail is to acquire a unique experience to perceive the lifestyle and cultural values of the Tamang community throughout the 9 days of the trekking course. Amid hundreds of ethnic communities of Nepal, Tamang is one of the largest groups, about 6% of the total population in Nepal are Tamangs. Their matchless hospitality, festivals, and exclusive lifestyle make them one of the most culturally interesting communities of Nepal.

The settlements of Tamangs have widespread throughout Nepal. Accommodation facility is available in the during the trekking days. Guests will be well-taken care of by the host families. The host family will take you around the village and introduce you to the beauties of the Tamang culture, heritage, and festivals.

Itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1440m, 7hrs)

You will start the journey from Kathmandu. The driver will take you along the western edge of Langtang National Park via a bumpy and steep road until you reach Syabrubesi, which will be the start point of this heritage trail.

Day 2: Trek to Gotlang

Starting from Syabrubesi, you will take several steep shortcuts to avoid walking in huge hairpin bends via the main road. If uphill is seems too much, you can hop-on the afternoon local bus that comes through Syabrubesi to Thambuchet. Soon the dirt track turns into stone steps and you will pass through mustard and buckwheat fields. You will stop for lunch at Bahun Danda Pass (2100m). After lunch, you will climb towards Tsamkhand Stupa where you can observe Tamang women reciting mantras. You will continue the trek along the Goljung Valley until you reach Gotlang (2238m), a picturesque village where houses have wooden shutters with carved and colorful Tibetan decorations, where you will spend the night.

Day 3: Trek from Gotlang to Tatopani village

On day two you will follow a line of stone pyramids (chortens) with written mantras. They will guide you towards the Bamdang Khola Valley. Once the valley is narrowed, you will follow a path paved with stone steps and come close to Chilime village (1762m). If you are lucky you can even get a glimpse of the Langtang peak at 7000 meters high. You will cross the Chilime River via a suspension bridge and have a long hike towards Tatopani village. Tatopani is a small resort where half of its houses are turned into lodges for trekkers.

Day 4: Trek to Nagthali Ghyang

Keeping eye on the trail can be tricky in this initial section as you climb uphill 560m via the settlement and Gompa of Brimdang to the ridge tip meadow of Nagthalighyang. In clear weather, you can view the magnificent mountains such as; Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal and Saliung Himal.

Day 5: Trek from Naghtali Ghyang to Thuman

Bright and early you will start the day with an uphill hike to Taruche viewpoint for the clearest valley views. From Naghtali Ghyang you will descend steeply for 820 meters throught the forest towards the beautiful village of Thuman. This village has a small monastery and amazing lodges where you will spend the night.

Day 6: Trek to Timure

From Thuman you will leave for Timure. Timure is on the old trade route to Tibet. A fort at Rasuwagadi in Timure is a historical reminder of the Nepal-Tibet relations that has existed for many centuries. A suspension bridge here links Nepal and Tibet.

Day 7: Trek to Briddim

From Timure, follow the road downstream for an hour to an easily missed footpath branching left up to Lingling, where food and charming lodging is available at the Traditional Homestay. From Lingling it is a 2 hours ascent to Briddim, a scenic Tamang Village decorated with colourful Tibetan decorations.

Day 8: Trek to Syabrubesi

A quick side trip around Briddim village, visit Gompa, Chorten & trail slightly downhill through a pine forest to Syabrubesi.

Day 9: Drive from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu

A drive back to Kathmandu via Dhucnhe, Ramche & Trishuli Bazaar, there are beautiful views of the Langtang Himalaya which you can see from the bus and arrive in Kathmandu after a nine hour drive.
